What gives quartzite its character

Quartzite begins as sandstone: quartz grains deposited by water and wind, then buried. Under heat and pressure the grains recrystallize and fuse, and the boundaries between them disappear. The stone that emerges is essentially a solid mass of interlocking quartz, which is what accounts for its hardness.

Veining in quartzite comes from mineral impurities that were present in the original sand and became mobilized during metamorphosis — iron oxides producing golds and rusts, other minerals producing greys and greens. These veins are decorative rather than structural weak points, flaws or cracks.

The visual range is wide. Some quartzites, such as Taj Mahal are prized for their soft sweeping movement. Others, like Cristallo are strongly crystalline and can be translucent. Macaubas, Mont Blanc, and Fusion sit at various points in between and can have features from both ends of the spectrum.

Choosing your slab

Hardness cuts both ways. Quartzite’s hardness makes it exceptionally durable in use, and it also takes more time to fabricate. Budget for fabrication cost and time accordingly, and use a fabricator experienced with the material. Evolv Surfaces can connect you with one.

Which finish? Polished has a mirror-like shine and helps darker spaces feel brighter. Honed is a smooth matte that works with almost any design. Leathered has texture; each stone takes to it differently, and it hides fingerprints while emphasizing the natural elements of the stone.

Waterfall edges. Quartzite is a favorite for waterfall islands because the veining can be carried around the corner in one continuous run. Ask us to pull the matching slab from the same block.

Care and Maintenance

Clean with pH-neutral stone cleaner. Quartzite does not etch with common household acids, so a spilled glass of wine or a cut lemon should not mark the surface.

Sealing is required to maintain your quartzite countertop and should be performed about once a year depending on the intensity of use for the area and the brand of sealer. Discuss sealing options and recommendations with your fabrication team prior to installation.

Quartzite tolerates direct heat well. As with any natural stone, avoid repeated extreme thermal cycling in a single spot and use of a trivet under hot pots and pans is recommended.

Marble, dolomite or quartzite?

These three are the most frequently confused stones in the showroom, because several quartzites and dolomites closely resemble white marble.

Questions people ask us

Does quartzite etch like marble?

No. Quartzite should not etch with household acids, which is the main practical difference between the two.

Yes. Taj Mahal is a highly popular quartzite quarried in Brazil. It is known for subtle, creamy, tone-on-tone bands of color and is an exceptionally easy stone to live with, both in looks and maintenance.

Yes, about once a year depending on how hard the area works and the brand of sealer. Discuss sealing options with your fabrication team before installation.

Slightly. Quartzite rates around 7 on the Mohs scale against granite’s 6 to 7, and it is more uniformly hard because it is composed almost entirely of quartz.

It depends on the stone and the slab. Tell us where it is going and we will send pricing on slabs that fit. Fabrication and installation are quoted separately by your fabricator.

Every slab is one of a kind. Come pick yours.
