What gives marble its character

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure, recrystallizing its calcium carbonate into the dense stone prized in architecture for millennia. Its defining characteristic is veining: mineral impurities drawn into linear patterns during metamorphosis.

Iron oxides produce golds and rusts, serpentine produces greens, and graphite and bituminous material produce the greys and blacks of Bardiglio and Nero Marquina. The translucency that distinguishes fine marble comes from that recrystallized calcite: light penetrates a short distance into the surface before scattering, which is why polished white marble has visual depth.

Choosing your slab

Veining is directional, so layout matters. Marble is commonly bookmatched: adjacent slabs cut from the same block and opened like a book to mirror the veining. Tell us the application and we will pull sequential slabs from one block.

Honed hides more than polished. A polished surface shows etching clearly. On a honed surface the contrast is far lower and etching becomes much less visible. For a working kitchen, honed is the best choice.

Understand patina before you buy. Well-sealed marble resists staining, but with daily use a patina develops. In much of Europe this is regarded as the material maturing, and part of the beauty of life with marble.

Care and Maintenance

Clean with a mild, fragrance-free dish soap and water. Avoid vinegar, citrus acids and harsh multi-purpose cleaners.

Sealing slows absorption and reduces staining. It does not prevent etching. Anti-etch treatments do: many brands last for years and protect against both etching and staining, which makes a marble kitchen virtually maintenance-free. Discuss options with your fabricator.

White marble will not scorch, but it can crack from thermal shock. Use a trivet under hot pots and pans.

Marble, dolomite or quartzite?

These three are the most frequently confused stones in the showroom, because several quartzites and dolomites closely resemble white marble.

Questions people ask us

Can marble be used on kitchen countertops?

Yes, and it has been for centuries, but with realistic expectations. Households that accept patina are consistently happy with marble kitchens. Those wanting a surface that looks new indefinitely may want to consider other stone options.

Staining is discoloration from a substance absorbed into the stone, and sealing helps prevent it. Etching is a chemical reaction that removes a thin layer of the surface, leaving a dull mark.

No. A well sealed countertop prevents absorption and reduces staining, but etching is a surface reaction with the calcium carbonate itself. No topical sealer prevents it.

Honed marble is the best option for kitchens as etch marks and daily wear are far less visible against a matte surface than a reflective one. Polished marble is better suited to vanities, feature walls, and lower-contact applications.

No. Most marble slabs you will come across in showrooms are intended to be used for indoor applications and will not fare well outdoors when exposed to the elements and UV light.

Two consecutive slabs from the same block are finished so that they open like a book so their veining mirrors across the seam and match up on all 4 sides of the slabs. It creates a symmetrical pattern across large surfaces or when joining 2 pieces together to create a decorative element.

No. Both are Italian marbles from the Carrara region, but Carrara typically has a mottled field with fine, soft veining, while Calacatta has a whiter field with bolder, more dramatic veining.

Every slab is one of a kind. Come pick yours.
